There comes a time in a woman’s life, my life, when a canvas tote bag is not enough as my go-to bag. Even a very nice clean canvas bag with no coffee stains isn’t going to cut it for much longer (it’s not just me that has them is it?).
I never had an ‘It’ bag back in the 90’s, partly the overt designer label hardwear thing wasn’t me… but budget was also a ‘slight’ inhibitor as well. As a young 20-something in my first job my finances could not have stretched to a several hundred pound bag.
And now? Nope, still don’t have the finances for such things; a 13 and a 10 year have put paid to that. (Love them.) But also, as much as I can appreciate a good bag – boots and shoes have always been more my thing.
I realise in many aspects of my life I don’t like things too pristine (clean yes), but I like things a little mussed up, not perfect. I like things slightly more casual or lived in, rigid boxy bags that aren’t as flexible and and that look too box-fresh don’t quite do it for me…
And in this brave new world of lock down/not lock down/possibly lock down again, I need a bag ready for action, roomy and a little more slouchy. I’m not adverse to a nylon, canvas, pleather or leather bag, but roomability and size to carry all of my stuff is key; sometimes lap top and some work stuff, sometimes maybe just some of life’s essentials bread etc and let’s face it bottle of wine.
I want and need a versatile bag that I could use for work, pop to the shops (whilst we can still pop) and even head to the park with with snacks etc for the smalls… a/separate pockets for keys/phone? – ideally, yes please. Not too much to ask surely?!
These are what I’ve found ‘out there’ that I would very happily put on my arm and shoulder.
It was the Mustard colourway of this bag that caught my eye, there are various colours available and a rudely good price for a leather bag. (Mustard with a navy, grey or black coat… hello)
Connie & Pearl Mustard Tote Leather Shopper £55
This colourway is described as Chocolate mix. I’m sold.
M&S Leather Casual Boho bag £89
This will only improve with age. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
The Leather Store £143
Smart slouchy? Good hardwear and two different length straps, boom.
& Other Stories Slouchy duo strap leather bag £165
A similar style but pleather…
Fiorelli Frankie hobo bag £65
Go big or go home. I might have featured this before – or something very similar. Still love it. So simple and so elegant.
Cos Folded Leather Shoulder bag £180
Deepest richest burgandy. Beautiful.
Zara Tote bag with zip £49.99
Pleather bags from Zara, available in the two colours below, and on sale.
Zara Tote Bag with Gathered Side Detail £15.99
Ruffled Nylon – this would hold a lot of ‘stuff’.
Topshop Stone Nylon Tote Bag £22
A black nylon weekender – could definitely fit lap top etc in this… and it looks like it could act as a small duvet on colder days when a bag-on-the-lap is needed.
Topshop Nylon Black Pad Weekender bag £25
Not a million miles away from the canvas totes that I’ve carrying all summer. I’m never adverse to a bit of khaki, though this also comes in cream and black – it’s also water resistant.
Watershedbrand Union Tote £15
Finally, the Mama of all Tote Bags. Dang, this is good. Love. Also available in Olive Green.
Zara Tote Bag £19.99
What do you look for in a bag? A carry everything bucket or something more compartmentalised? Or are you still brandishing a canvas tote like me?! xx
