back to black, evolve-edit

Back to black.

So – here we are, end of term as it were. The end of an era too – as the 11 year old is leaving her only ever school and moving on up to secondary in September. Her uniform is already ordered for the start of next term. Gulp.

Try as I might to venture out from my grown up uniform – as a creature of a certain amount on habit, or need for ease, shall we say – I do have a fall back uniform. My Go-to pieces – that in the most, are inevitably black.

A couple of weeks ago Mr E-E and I were heading Out-Out to a friends 40th birthday party – I faffed like a chief faffer, having decided that I *needed* something new to wear to it. The dress I’d originally thought to wear was a little too polyester for the occasion. I looked high and low – but couldn’t find anything that was quite doing the job and within some sensible and justifiable budget.

Fall back to a hair cut (much needed) and my trusty black Hush jumpsuit, big earrings and some orange tie-up sandals from a wedding season a couple of years ago. It felt good. Our friend had a ‘it’s my party and I will change MY dress half way through if I want to’ moment too – blinking marvellous (to be that organised!).

At this party were pretty dresses, dressy dresses, jumpsuits, high heels and trainers – and everything in between. One friend who was there, was wearing a stunning, simple (black) pleated maxi V-neck dress – it was gorgeous – she told me it was £10 from Tu, Sainsburys… I nearly spluttered my cocktail everywhere. I was expecting her to say it was a high end possible high-street type number. (I have tried to find it obv’s; alas no where to be seen.)

Black can be forgiving, flattering (thankfully) and deceiving (in a good way), anonymous too, and has a means business attitude to it, as well as being forever hot and always cool.

But black for now, in high summer? It does indeed absorb all of the heat, but whatever, I still love it; it’s my default.
So looking at things that we can wear right now; most things all can be layered up nicely to take us through to autumn and winter; they are items that can can work hard for us.

Starting with an easy tee. Perfect. Dressed up. Dressed down.
